"Stolen from Us": Family Demands Justice for Keith Porter, Black Father Killed by Off-Duty ICE Agent

Keith Porter Jr., a 43-year-old Black father, was fatally shot by an off-duty ICE agent on New Year's Eve in his Los Angeles apartment complex. According to activists and family, Porter may have fired a celebratory shot, a common practice. An ICE agent residing in the same complex then allegedly donned tactical gear, exited his home, and shot Porter dead in front of his residence.

Melina Abdullah, co-founder of Black Lives Matter Los Angeles, and Chynah Tyler, Porter's cousin, detailed the incident, stating Porter was celebrating and may have fired a celebratory shot. An ICE agent, also a resident, then put on tactical gear and shot Porter dead in front of his home.

Despite the killing, the LAPD and LA County District Attorney's Office provided no information to Porter's family or the community. No arrest was made, the ICE agent's name was not released, and no charges were filed. Activists accuse officials of a 'character assassination' of Porter, initially labeling him a 'suspect' and 'active shooter' while hailing the agent as a 'hero'.

Melina Abdullah stated, 'What we know is nothing is happening and the community has been told nothing. The family has been told nothing.' She added that the DA 'basically said he doesn't intend to do anything' and early reports 'hailed the gunman... and called the victim... a suspect and an active shooter.' Chynah Tyler confirmed, 'None whatsoever. We've not received any information in regards to whether there'll be a full investigation or not.'

The incident is framed as part of a broader pattern of federal agent overreach and lack of accountability. Speakers suggest that the influx of ICE agents, some with 'GI Joe dreams' and lacking experience, act as 'vigilantes' who disregard procedure and civil liberties, causing harm to American citizens.

Chynah Tyler stated, 'What we do know is that with this mass call for ICE agents with no experience... a majority of them are people that now feel like they have... a right to consider us not valuable enough for them to follow procedure.' She added, 'they're conducting themselves as vigilantes and it seems that they're causing more harm to American citizens.'

The state of Minnesota, along with Minneapolis and St. Paul, sued the Trump administration to block the deployment of thousands of armed, masked DHS agents, describing it as a 'federal invasion.' Incidents included Border Patrol using chemical weapons, tackling people, handcuffing school staff at a high school, and ICE agents chasing a DoorDash driver into a home and ramming a Latino man's car.

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison announced the lawsuit, stating, 'Deployment of thousands of armed masked DHS agents to Minnesota has done our state serious harm. This is, in essence, a federal invasion of the Twin Cities and Minnesota, and it must stop.' The host detailed incidents including Border Patrol using chemical weapons and ICE agents chasing a DoorDash driver.
