Welfare Check Lead Cops To House of Horrors

The incident began as a welfare check for James Colbear, who his friend Rhonda King believed was suicidal after his mother's death. This initial concern, despite some misinterpretations about James's immediate intentions, was the catalyst that brought law enforcement into a situation far more complex than a mental health crisis.

Rhonda called 911 reporting James was suicidal and trying to access guns (01:19, 09:02). Deputies found James agitated and injured, leading to further questioning that revealed his mother's unreported death (06:18, 22:24).

James Colbear's casual admission that his mother had died the previous morning and her body was still in his house shocked deputies. Upon entering the residence, they found the elderly woman's body with lacerations and blood, clearly indicating a non-natural death, contradicting James's initial claims of a simple fall.

Officers were stunned to learn James's mother was deceased at his other house and no one had gone there (22:33). Upon entry, they found 'Dead body. DV obvious 107 blood on the walker on her lacerations to her legs' (27:36).

During interrogation, James initially attributed his mother's injuries to falls and brittle skin due to medication. However, he eventually admitted to physical altercations, stating he had hit her face with an open palm during arguments, and that he felt 'accountable' for her death, which led him to conceal it and delay reporting.

James admitted his mother's face was 'bruised up' from 'some of our arguments' and 'My hands' (36:03, 36:45). He stated he didn't call 911 because he knew he 'would be found to be you know doing elder abuse' (35:07). He also admitted to throwing away a blood-stained sheet (46:35).
