Summary

The episode covers several critical news stories. It begins with the unexpected success of Zohran Mamdani-endorsed democratic socialist candidates in recent New York primaries, highlighting their wins against incumbents and the Democratic establishment's mixed reactions. It then details a horrific case of elder abuse at a New York state-run veterans' home, exposed by a wife's hidden camera, revealing systemic failures and delayed accountability. The podcast also investigates the DEA's controversial 'walking drugs' policy, which allowed hundreds of thousands of fentanyl pills to reach New Mexico streets in pursuit of larger criminal cases, raising public safety concerns. Finally, it touches on internet rumors linking Donald Trump to an experimental weight-loss drug and the ethical debate surrounding GLP-1 prescriptions for elementary-aged children, alongside a report on the first euthanasia of a child under 12 in the Netherlands and the severe sentencing of alleged Antifa members in the US.
These stories collectively highlight significant shifts in political landscapes, critical failures in public welfare systems, and evolving ethical debates in law enforcement and healthcare. The rise of democratic socialists challenges traditional party structures, the veteran abuse case exposes vulnerabilities in care facilities, and the DEA's fentanyl policy reveals a high-stakes approach to drug enforcement. Discussions around weight loss drugs and child euthanasia force a re-evaluation of medical ethics, while the Antifa sentencing raises questions about protest, justice, and the definition of domestic terrorism.

Insights

1Democratic Socialist Surge in New York Primaries

Zohran Mamdani's endorsed candidates achieved significant, unexpected victories in New York's Democratic primaries. All three candidates he backed won, with two unseating sitting lawmakers and one beating an incumbent's chosen successor. This included Claire Valdez winning in the 'Kami corridor' district and Daria Lisa Avila Chevalier, a 32-year-old democratic socialist, narrowly defeating 71-year-old five-term incumbent Adriano Espaillat despite a controversial social media history.

All three of the candidates Mamdani endorsed won their elections. Two beat out sitting lawmakers, and the third beat the chosen successor to the outgoing incumbent. Daria Lisa Avila Chevalier, a 32-year-old organizer and democratic socialist, narrowly beat out Adriano Espaillat, the 71-year-old, five-term incumbent and chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

2Systemic Abuse Exposed in Veterans' Home

Angela O'Toole, wife of Gulf War veteran Albert O'Toole, used a hidden camera to expose severe physical abuse of her Alzheimer's-afflicted husband by an aide, Matthew Cox, at a New York state-run veterans' facility. The footage showed slapping, punching, and slamming Albert, and even hitting him with a shoe. Despite the aide's arrest, he remained employed and paid by the federal VA for months, highlighting a lack of accountability and a facility history of 47 complaints and 25 citations.

What she found like it straight up out of a horror. Because now, caught on camera, you have Albert's aide yanking food out of his hands, slapping him, punching him, even grabbing him by the neck with both hands to slam him back into his wheelchair. One point, you can even see this guy, Matthew Cox, whop and Albert over the head with the bottom of a shoe. Turns out that up to this past weekend, Cox was still employed at the federal VA and was even still getting paychecks.

3DEA's 'Walking Drugs' Policy and Fentanyl Risks

An Associated Press investigation revealed the DEA's 'walking drugs' policy allowed hundreds of thousands of fentanyl pills to be distributed in New Mexico between 2023-2025. This strategy, typically used for less deadly drugs like cocaine, aims to trace narcotics through the supply chain to dismantle larger trafficking operations. However, a whistleblower agent, David Howe, raised alarms about the extreme danger of fentanyl, which is lethal in tiny amounts, arguing the policy endangered public safety. The DEA later revised its protocols in 2024 to allow more discretion in balancing public safety against investigative benefits.

DEA agents, they repeatedly monitored shipments of fentanyl pills, but chose not to seize them so that federal prosecutors could bring bigger criminal cases against drug traffickers. You had D.A. Special Agent David Howell: 'we poisoned our community to make through our own willful blindness.' The DEA adopted fentanyl protocols in 2017 that directed that agents should seize or otherwise prevent the distribution of fentanyl as soon as practicable. Then in 2024, the DOJ rewrote the rules to say that investigators may exercise discretion.

4Ethical Dilemmas of Weight Loss Drugs for Children

The episode highlights the growing trend of parents giving GLP-1 weight-loss drugs off-label to elementary-aged children to combat severe childhood obesity. While these drugs are only approved for children 12 and older (and being tested on those as young as six), doctors are prescribing them due to the serious health consequences of early-onset obesity. Concerns exist regarding insufficient nutrient intake, hormone growth, and unknown long-term effects if taken for decades, as the drugs only work while being used.

We're now seeing reports about parents giving their young, elementary age kids, GOP ones, in a desperate attempt to fight childhood obesity. Most dope ones, they're only approved for kids as young as 12 years old, though they are also being tested on kids as young as six. There are some fears that it could lead to insufficient nutrient intake, like in hormone growth and puberty. If you stop, you're going to gain the weight back. And we don't know if there are consequences to starting at as a kid.

Notable Moments

The host crowns Angela O'Toole the 'Bamf of the Day' for her courage in exposing abuse at the veterans' home.

This highlights the profound impact of an individual's initiative in uncovering and addressing systemic failures, and serves as a call to action for vigilance in care settings.
