Legal analyst Candace Kelly breaks down a court order for ICE to preserve evidence in Minnesota and the Gullah Geechee community's successful fight against gentrification in Georgia. She also details ongoing social media addiction lawsuits against TikTok, Snap, Meta, and YouTube, and the protection offered by 'shield laws' to nurse practitioners mailing abortion pills into restrictive states. Insights

1Fulton County Election Office Raid and Voter Privacy Battles

The FBI raided the Fulton County Election Hub in Union City, Georgia, seeking records, computers, and ballots from the 2020 elections. This action occurred amidst former President Trump's claims of widespread voting fraud. Concurrently, a federal judge in Oregon dismissed a DOJ lawsuit aimed at seizing private voter information, a victory for voter privacy advocates like the ACLU.

The FBI raided an election office in Georgia's Fulton County outside Atlanta on Wednesday. This comes as President Trump claims that his 2020 election defeat was the result of widespread voting fraud. The warrant sought a number of records related to the 2020 elections, agency's computers and ballots... In Oregon, a judge has dismissed a DOJ lawsuit seeking to seize private voters information. The ACLU argues that the DOJ actions undermine the freedom to vote and voter privacy.

2Minnesota's Standoff with ICE and Allegations of Retaliation

A court issued a temporary restraining order compelling ICE to preserve evidence in a shooting case involving Alex Prey and Renee Good. Separately, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison filed a lawsuit questioning the unusually high number of ICE patrol agents in the state, suggesting it is a punitive measure against Minnesota for being a sanctuary city. There are allegations that the Attorney General Bondi offered to reduce ICE presence if Minnesota released welfare and private voting lists.

A court put a restraining order in place to say, 'Look, ICE, you have to preserve the evidence.'... This is a lawsuit that was filed by Keith Ellison and he's saying, 'Look, why were you even here?'... Attorney General Bondi saying, 'Listen, if you want all this stuff in Minnesota to go away, you can do a couple of things for us. You can release your welfare uh list. You can release your private voting list.'

3Gullah Geechee Community's Victory Against Gentrification

The Gullah Geechee community on Sapelo Island, Georgia, successfully fought against external pressures to build larger vacation homes. They secured a referendum vote to maintain existing ordinances limiting house sizes to 1,400 square feet, thereby protecting their ancestral land, culture, and preventing gentrification that would arise from increased taxes and changing demographics.

This has to do with protecting and preserving land and culture. What's going on is that there are ordinances in place in the Sapalo Island saying that you cannot build a house that's over 1400 ft... The people who came out and voted said no we do not want these homes to be built built bigger than 1,400 square ft. Why? You've got tax issues that come along with that. You've got people who come in um and and change the the land, change the culture, change everything about what's going on... It also is a matter of gentrification.

4Social Media Addiction Lawsuits and Corporate Accountability

TikTok and Snap reached undisclosed settlements in a product liability lawsuit filed by a 20-year-old woman (KGM) who alleged their algorithms caused addiction, body dysmorphia, and suicidal ideation. Similar cases against Meta and YouTube are proceeding to trial, with thousands of other lawsuits, including those from school boards, also emerging, highlighting concerns about the mental health impact of social media algorithms.

Tik Tok and Snap, they actually settled this case with um with a person by the name of KGM... What she said was there's really a product liability case... that the algorithms that the automatic push feeds would cause her to have an addiction and essentially feel bad about herself... causing mental illness. So she and her mother sued all four of these entities... You have Meta and you have YouTube. Those cases are going to continue... We are talking about school boards that are that are plaintiffs because these school boards are saying that now we are dealing with so many mental health issues because of your snap your algorithm your automatic feeds.

5AOC Exposes CVS Health's Vertical Integration and Healthcare Monopoly

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez publicly interrogated the CEO of CVS Health, David Joiner, exposing the company's extensive vertical integration. CVS Health owns Aetna (health insurance), Oak Street Health (medical clinics), CVS Pharmacies, CVS Caremark (pharmacy benefit manager), and drug manufacturer Core. Ocasio-Cortez argued this 'captive strategy' allows CVS to control every aspect of a patient's care journey, leading to significant market concentration, 1000% markups on medications, and ultimately 'screwing' patients. She advocated for breaking up such corporate monopolies, drawing parallels to the Glass-Steagall Act for banks.

CVS Health owns Etna, the health insurance company... also owns Oak Street Health Medical Clinics... and CVSarmacies and CVS Health um also owns CVS Caremark, the pharmacy benefit manager... and they also own the drug manufacturer Core... This is what's known as a captive strategy... The price Kate pays for that medication is dictated by Etna, CVS, Caremark... I think it works very well for CVS... the health insurance gets a cut, the pharmacy benefit manager gets a cut, the drug manufacturer gets a cut, and the patient gets screwed... The Federal Trade Commission has also found that healthc care conglomerates like CVS Health charge more for medications filled at theiries. We're talking about,000% markups on medications for cancer and HIV... I think corporate monopolies are a problem and this vertical integration is destroying people's ability to access care... We should be considering that in our healthcare system and if we believe in competition I think we should put our votes and our legislation in alignment with that and consider breaking up this industry.

6The Erasure of Black History and Converging Threats to Civil Rights

Axios reporter Deleno Massie highlights civil rights leaders' warnings about a 'convergence of threats' impacting democracy, the economy, and civil rights. These threats include rising unemployment (particularly for Black women), the active removal of historical references (e.g., slavery mentions at national parks), widespread book bans targeting Black authors and stories, and the elimination of crucial databases related to Black health and education. This systematic erasure of history and data makes it difficult to address existing disparities and represents a 'recoil' from previous social reckonings.

Civil rights leaders saying that the country isn't facing a single crisis but a convergence of legal, economic and democratic threats... The eraser of of history... them removing some of the placers that mentioned slavery um just outside the the National Park Museum in Philadelphia... the whitewashing of our history... different databases that have been eliminated, especially as it pertains to black health, um cickle cell, and uh the infant mortality... 591 book bands... most of them were people who who were writing about the black story, Tony Morrison... not being able to tell how many black students there are, how many Hispanic students there are, like this is important data because it can show you where the disparities are.

Lessons

  • Engage with local history initiatives like 'Walk and Talk Tours' to learn and preserve undertold community stories, especially those of marginalized groups.
  • Support legislative efforts to regulate corporate monopolies in industries like healthcare, recognizing how vertical integration can inflate prices and limit patient choice.
  • Advocate for the protection of voter privacy and resist attempts to seize private voter information, as seen in the Oregon DOJ lawsuit.
  • Be aware of 'shield laws' in states protecting healthcare providers who offer services, such as abortion pills, across state lines into restrictive areas.
  • Recognize the impact of social media algorithms on mental health and support efforts to hold platforms accountable for product liability, as highlighted by ongoing addiction lawsuits.
