Judge Roasts 'Disgusting' Gilgo Serial Killer, Locks Him Up for Life

Valerie Mack's parents emphasized that Heuermann could not touch their daughter's soul, and Jessica Taylor's cousin recounted the horror of learning about her dismembered body.

Amanda Funderburg (Melissa Barthelemy's sister) stated, 'You can look at me while I'm talking... I was robbed of my youth... I was forced to live with crippling anxiety, depression, PTSD.' Nicolette (Maureen Brainard-Barnes' daughter) said, 'Rex Heuermann stole decades of life from a woman who should still be here.' Lillyana Waterman (Megan Waterman's daughter) expressed, 'He stole an entire lifetime of memories that me and her never got to make.'

Judge Timothy Mazzei directly confronted Rex Heuermann, expressing disbelief at his lack of genuine remorse and labeling him a 'disgusting, despicable small man' and a 'coward.' The judge then proceeded to sentence Heuermann to multiple consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole for the murders of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello, ensuring he will die in prison.

Judge Mazzei stated, 'You've been described as a very big man. You're a disgusting, despicable small man, if you're a man at all. And you're a coward.' He sentenced Heuermann to 'the rest of your life without the possibility of parole' for multiple counts, with sentences running consecutively.

The prosecution detailed evidence from Heuermann's computer, which contained extensive planning documents for his murders. These included a list titled 'Things to Remember' with notes on sound control, hitting techniques, and rope types, and another document called 'HK2000' outlining problems like DNA and fingerprints, and supplies needed such as 'saw or cutting tools' and 'hair nets.' Heuermann also researched serial killer experts like John Douglas to refine his methods and avoid capture, and his searches included torture pornography.

The prosecutor described Heuermann's 'planning document that was recovered from one of the defendant's electronic devices' which 'coldly plans out the murder of multiple women.' Details included 'sound travels,' 'get sleep before hunt,' 'use heavy rope for neck,' and lists for 'DS' (dump site) and 'TRG' (target), noting 'small is good.'

Bob Macedonio, the lawyer for Rex Heuermann's ex-wife, Asa Ellerup, revealed that Heuermann eventually admitted to the eight homicides in person to his ex-wife. Macedonio also described his own interactions with Heuermann in jail, noting that Heuermann was 'professional, courteous, appropriate,' 'articulate,' and even possessed a 'sense of humor,' highlighting the chilling contrast between his public demeanor and his horrific crimes.

Macedonio stated, 'He did admit to her in person... that he was responsible for all these eight homicides.' He also said, 'He's always been professional, courteous, appropriate... He's actually has a sense of humor, also.'
