A Colorado appeals court overturned the convictions of two Aurora paramedics, Peter Cichunec and Jeremy Cooper, who were found guilty of criminally negligent homicide in the 2019 death of Elijah McClain. The ruling mandates a new trial, despite prosecutors' vows to appeal to the state's highest court. McClain died after being forcibly given a higher-than-recommended dose of ketamine by the paramedics, who were told by officers that he exhibited 'superhuman strength' and and was 'on something' without a proper assessment.

Former Aurora Fire Rescue paramedics Peter Cichunec and Jeremy Cooper, both white men, arrived on the police scene August 24, 2019 when 23-year-old McClain was already handcuffed on the ground face down and had lost consciousness once. Without assessing McClain's condition, the medics gave him 500 mg of ketamine, a dose higher than a 143-pound man should be administered for his weight. McClain lost consciousness and never woke up. He died in the hospital just a few days later.

In Virginia, 99 out of 163 children reported missing this year are Black, representing nearly 60% of cases. Experts attribute this trend, which often increases during summer, to factors like family instability and a perceived lack of urgency and public outrage when Black children go missing. Virginia's unique policy requiring missing children reports to be entered into state and national databases within two hours may contribute to higher reported numbers compared to other states.

This year 163 children have been reported missing in Virginia. According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, 99 of those children are black. That's roughly six in 10 cases. ... Some of the factors that may lead to these cases include family instability, not feeling heard, and the lack of urgency and attention to some of these cases. Often times we find when a a black child or person of color goes missing, there's less urgency and kind of like public outrage about it. ... Virginia is requiring missing children reports to be entered into the state and national databases within 2 hours, and that's not a national policy. Correct. So, with that, that could actually impact why we do see higher numbers in Virginia.

Descendants of enslaved Black Americans are advocating for specific reparations in New York, including direct financial compensation, housing and land restoration, tuition-free education, student debt relief, and investment funds for Black-owned businesses. Concerns were raised about the commission's delayed timeline (now 2029) and the use of broad language like 'historically disadvantaged' which could dilute the focus on unique harms to descendants of enslaved Africans. The call is for systematic, generational, and economic repair, not just symbolic gestures.

My thoughts and recommendations are direct financial compensation for descendants of enslaved Africans in the United States. Housing, land ownership, and property restoration programs. Tuition-free education and student debt relief. Grants and investment funds for Black-owned businesses and community development. Healthcare, mental health investments for impacted communities. ... Terms like historically disadvantaged or broad minority language can dilute the unique harm done to descendants of enslaved Americans-Africans in the United States. ... New York lawmakers are pushing back the timeline for the state's reparations commission, delaying its final recommendations for Black New Yorkers until 2029 instead of 2027.

The hosts argue that Democrats consistently prioritize being 'liked' and 'above board' over strategically acquiring and wielding power, in stark contrast to Republicans who 'play to win' and disregard norms. This approach leads to a lack of long-term planning (e.g., no 'Project 2026' equivalents), reactive responses, and a failure to engage on multiple political fronts (legal, political, grassroots). The discussion frames the current political climate as a 'hot civil war' where ruthlessness and a 'war-like mentality' are necessary.

Republicans play for power and Democrats play for popularity. They want to be liked and they want everybody to think that they're above board. ... Democrats do not play for keeps. They do not play the long game. ... This is about who has more conviction in using the power to advance the priorities and policies that they want. ... We are in the middle of a civil war. It's not a cold civil war anymore. It's a hot civil war. ... When you're in a war, what is required in a war are for generals to get together, lay out a war plan. What is going to be the strategy in order for us to win this war? ... In a war, you attack on multiple fronts.

Richard 'Sleepy' Floyd's Inspire Music Collective in Indianapolis provides free music education, digital media training (podcasting, filming, video production), and traditional instrumental instruction to Black and brown youth. The program aims to build confidence through 'small wins' and expose students to technical careers, fostering a sustainable future. Funded by donations and grants, the collective also works with schools to produce announcements, allowing students to gain hands-on experience in roles like editing and reporting.

We spend most of our time educating black and brown kids on digital media aspects and music production. So, that encompasses podcasting. We do a lot of filming and video production. So, we're we're teaching technical careers. And then also, we do traditional instrumental instruction. ... We have a lot of free opportunities that we offer during the week. We have a all ages jam session that's centered around jazz... we produce announcements for schools... where the cool kids are able to produce those in technical roles like an editor, you know, a reporter as yourself. ... We look for small wins, we teach them small concepts to to get them attracted to the idea of doing the the task and then from there, their confidence through with their individuality just really takes over.
