Trump DOJ Arrested Don Lemon, Georgia Fort. Black Press Freedom on the Line. Epstein Files

The Trump Department of Justice arrested journalists Don Lemon and Georgia Fort on the same day it released millions of pages of Jeffrey Epstein files. This timing is framed as a deliberate attempt to create a media distraction from the damaging contents of the Epstein files, which included allegations against Donald Trump.

Host Roland Martin states, 'I wonder why those arrests took place today on the same day those papers were released.' (06:37) and 'This is all about separating and the distraction.' (01:13:16). Candace Kelly notes, 'There is no coincidence that was planned.' (01:14:45).

The DOJ used the FACE Act, a federal statute prohibiting force or intimidation against those accessing reproductive services or churches, to justify the arrests. However, Don Lemon and Georgia Fort were present as journalists covering a protest, not participating in it, making the application of this law highly questionable and a direct threat to press freedom.

Roland Martin clarifies, 'These were journalists who were covering the protest... Don Lemon streamed seven hours from that particular day.' (09:32). Aaron Haynes, NABJ President, asserts, 'Don Lemon and Georgia Fort were both doing their jobs... arresting journalists for news gathering is a direct threat to press freedom.' (15:48).

Federal magistrate judges and career prosecutors in Minnesota and Los Angeles had previously refused to authorize arrest warrants for Lemon and Fort, citing insufficient evidence and lack of probable cause. The DOJ bypassed these rejections by going to a grand jury to secure indictments, indicating a persistent and potentially abusive pursuit of charges.

Matt Manning references, 'The federal magistrate judge who reviewed the evidence approved charges against only three of the people... He refused to sign arrest warrants for Mr. Lemon and the others citing insufficient evidence.' (41:40). Candace Kelly adds, 'This is why five judges already said no that there was no probable cause.' (40:50).

The arrests are part of a larger pattern of the Trump administration's attacks on journalists and media organizations, including labeling critical reporting as 'fake news,' verbally attacking specific journalists (especially Black female journalists), and using federal agencies to suppress dissent. This behavior is seen as a threat to the First Amendment and the foundations of American democracy.

Aaron Haynes states, 'This administration has put a bullseye on media... the calling of anything that Donald Trump disagrees with as fake news.' (17:25). Octavia Treadway notes, 'Attempts to intimidate and and try to silence journalists are are really a threat not just to press freedom but to our democracy.' (16:17).

Panelists emphasize that voting is the primary mechanism to counter the authoritarian tendencies of the current administration by replacing those in power who enable such actions. They also highlight the critical role of independent Black-owned media in providing factual information and resisting content suppression by mainstream platforms.

Roland Martin argues, 'The only way to stop this fascist regime is at the ballot box.' (01:32:05). Wuni Zant stresses, 'Independent media, independent journalists are the lifeblood of our community.' (01:54:56).
