1Felony Charges and Resignation for Campaign Finance Fraud

Oklahoma State Representative AJ Pitman resigned from office after pleading guilty to three felony charges, including forgery and violating the Oklahoma Computer Crimes Act. These charges stemmed from her attempts to cover up the misuse of campaign funds.

State Representative AJ Pitman resigning from office the same day she pleaded guilty to felony charges. Our KCO's Evan Onto has been looking into this in the newsroom. Joining us live now. Evan, this is all over forged checks. That's right, Abby. a forge check that she submitted to the Oklahoma Ethics Commission. The attorney general says she did this to avoid repaying thousands of dollars in fines. Now, her sentence today keeps her out of jail, but required her to resign from office.

2Elaborate Scheme to Conceal Misuse of Funds

Pitman was initially investigated for misusing nearly $18,000 in campaign funds. To settle with the Ethics Commission, she was required to repay the money from her personal account. Instead, she conspired with her legislative assistant, Trina Bias, to doctor checks and bank statements to create the false appearance of repayment. She also submitted a fraudulent letter, allegedly written by her mother, claiming water damage destroyed campaign records.

In 2024, she admitted she misspent nearly $18,000 from her campaign fund as part of a settlement agreement with the ethics commission. In that agreement, she promised to pay that nearly $18,000 back to her campaign and also pay a separate fine of more than $17,000. The agreement required she pay that with her own money, not her campaigns. Fast forward to last June. The Ethics Commission required she make her first repayment of $12,000 and provide proof the money came from her personal account. That's where court documents say she messed up, alleging Pitman had her legislative assistant help doctor a check and bank documents to make it look like she'd withdrawn the money from her personal account. [...] Pitman asks Bias for urgent help, telling her she needed a $2,500 check dated January of that year and needed it to match a specific account. Pitman also telling Bias how to doctor a bank statement by blacking out certain parts of it. [...] And then she allegedly submitted a fraudulent building manager letter claiming that water damage had destroyed her campaign records. And basically she got exposed as lying about that too because apparently her mother actually wrote that letter.

3Host's Critique of Democratic Politicians

The host frames Pitman's actions as characteristic of Democratic politicians, accusing them of being 'fraudulent, shady, and criminal.' He argues that such behavior is 'part for the course' when Democrats face accountability, and attributes it to voters electing officials based on identity rather than credentials.

So, we got to talk about a Democrat who found out the hard way that she is in fact not above the law. [...] I think that she's just another example of the typical Democrat, right? How these people are the most fraudulent, shady, and criminal people in this country. [...] her behavior here, I think, is part for the course when it comes to Democrats and how they act when faced with accountability and responsibility for their crimes, right, for their own actions. [...] when you're voting these people into office, again, not based off what they've actually done, what they've accomplished, right? Based off their identity and things of that nature, this is what happens.

Lessons

  • Voters should prioritize a candidate's credentials and track record over identity politics to ensure ethical representation.
  • Citizens must demand robust oversight from ethics commissions to hold public officials accountable for campaign finance violations.
  • Media and constituents should persistently question politicians regarding alleged financial misconduct, as seen with reporters confronting Pitman.
