1Overturned Convictions in Elijah McClain Case
A Colorado appeals court overturned the convictions of two Aurora paramedics, Peter Sichinauk and Jeremy Cooper, who were previously found guilty of criminally negligent homicide in the 2019 death of Elijah McClain. The court ordered a new trial, despite state prosecutors' intent to appeal to the state's highest court. McClain died after paramedics administered 500 mg of ketamine, a dose higher than appropriate for his weight, without adequately assessing his condition, after police claimed he exhibited 'superhuman strength.'
Former Aurora Fire Rescue paramedics Peter Sichinauk and Jeremy Cooper, both white men, arrived on the police scene August 24th, 2019 when 23-year-old McClain was already handcuffed on the ground face down and had lost consciousness once. The body-worn camera footage played during the trials officer showed officers telling the two medics that McClain was exhibiting superhuman strength and that he was {quote} on something. Without assessing McLain's condition, the medics gave him 500 mg of ketamine, a dose higher than a 143-lb man should be administered for his weight. McLain lost consciousness and never woke up. He died in a hospital just a few days later.
2Reparations Demands and Delays in New York
Descendants of enslaved Black Americans presented specific demands to the New York State Community Commission on Reparations Remedies, including direct financial compensation, housing and land restoration, tuition-free education, student debt relief, grants for Black-owned businesses, and healthcare investments. Speakers emphasized the need for clear eligibility and strong implementation, not just recommendations. However, New York lawmakers have delayed the commission's final recommendations from 2027 to 2029, citing growing attacks on DEI programs and the erosion of Black power.
My thoughts and recommendations are direct financial compensation for descendants of enslaved Africans in the United States. Housing, land ownership, and property restoration programs. Tuition-free education and student debt relief. Grants and investment funds for Black-owned businesses and community development. Healthcare, mental health investments for impacted communities. And funding for genealogy, truth-telling, and preservation of our family histories. ...New York lawmakers are pushing back the timeline for the state's reparations commission, delaying its final recommendations for Black New Yorkers until 2029 instead of 2027.
3Disproportionate Missing Black Children in Virginia
In Virginia, 99 out of 163 children reported missing this year are Black, accounting for roughly six in ten cases. This trend is exacerbated during summer when school is out. Factors contributing to missing persons cases include family instability and a perceived lack of urgency and public attention when Black children or people of color go missing. Virginia's unique policy requiring missing children reports to be entered into state and national databases within two hours may contribute to its higher reported numbers.
This year 163 children have been reported missing in Virginia. According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, 99 of those children are black. That's roughly six in 10 cases. ...Some of the factors that may lead to these cases include family instability. Um, like I had mentioned previously, not feeling heard. Um, of course, the lack of um, kind of like urgency, um, and attention to some of these cases. Oftentimes, we find when a a black child or person of color goes missing, there's less urgency, um, and kind of like public outrage about it. ...Virginia is that they um, their reporting is different, as I understand. So, they're requiring missing children reports to be entered into the state and national databases within two hours, and that's not a national policy. Correct. So, with that, that could actually impact why we do see higher numbers in Virginia.
4Democrats' Strategic Failures in Political Warfare
Roland Martin and guests argue that Democrats consistently prioritize popularity and being 'above board' over the ruthless pursuit of power, unlike Republicans. This perceived weakness leads to Democrats being outmaneuvered in critical areas like redistricting. They advocate for a 'war-like mentality' with clear strategies across legal, political, and grassroots fronts, criticizing the lack of long-term planning (e.g., Project 2026, 2027) and effective use of Black-owned media.
Republicans play for power and Democrats play for popularity. They want to be liked, and they want everybody to think that they're above board. ...until Democrats wake up to the reality that this isn't about being on the straight and narrow... This is about who has more conviction in using the power to advance the priorities and policies that they want. ...if you got to change if you got to change the rules because the other side don't believe in the rules, that's what you got to do. ...We are in the middle of a civil war. It's not a cold civil war anymore. It's a hot civil war. ...when you're in a war, what is required in a war are for generals to get together, lay out a war plan. What is going to be the strategy in order for us to win this war? ...This war that we are in right now, there is a legal front. Then you have the political front. Then you have the grassroots front.
Bottom Line
The delay of New York's reparations recommendations to 2029, attributed to attacks on DEI and erosion of Black power, suggests a strategic political maneuver to defer action, potentially capitalizing on future political shifts or public fatigue.
This delay indicates that even with commissions established, the political will for concrete reparations may be fragile and susceptible to broader political pressures, potentially undermining the urgency felt by descendants.
Advocacy groups could leverage this extended timeline to build stronger coalitions, refine proposals, and intensify public education campaigns, focusing on the specific economic and social impacts of historical injustices to counter political pushback effectively.
The discussion highlights a critical disconnect between the Democratic Party's perceived desire for 'fairness' and 'popularity' versus the Republican Party's 'ruthless' pursuit of power, particularly in areas like redistricting.
This strategic imbalance means Democrats are often outmaneuvered, leading to a loss of political influence and the inability to advance their agenda effectively, even when they hold majorities.
For progressive movements, this implies a need to either pressure the Democratic Party to adopt more aggressive, 'war-like' strategies or to build independent power structures that can exert external pressure and achieve goals outside traditional party politics.
Lessons
- Parents should maintain open communication with their children and monitor online interactions to prevent missing persons cases, especially during summer months.
- Advocates for reparations should push for specific, intentional language in legislation to ensure eligibility requirements are clear and that the unique harm to descendants of enslaved Africans is not diluted by broad terms.
- Political strategists and activists should adopt a 'war-like mentality' with multi-front strategies (legal, political, grassroots) and long-term planning to effectively counter opposing political forces, rather than solely relying on traditional, 'fair' approaches.
Democratic 'War' Strategy for Political Power
Develop a comprehensive, multi-front war plan involving legal challenges, political maneuvering, and grassroots mobilization.
Prioritize power and winning over popularity, adopting a ruthless approach similar to political opponents when necessary.
Invest in long-term strategic planning (e.g., Project 2026, 2027, 2028, 2032) rather than short-term, reactive measures.
Effectively utilize Black-owned and Black-targeted media to disseminate messages, organize, and galvanize community support, rather than solely focusing on mainstream outlets.
Implement robust citizenship education programs to inform and train constituents on the stakes and strategies of political engagement, mirroring historical civil rights movements.
