Despite strong headline job growth (172,000 jobs added, 4.3% unemployment), the US economy exhibits a significant disconnect. The top third of wage earners are seeing their wages outpace inflation, driving spending in the service sector and contributing to 'sticky' inflation. Conversely, the bottom two-thirds are experiencing wage erosion below inflation levels, leading to widespread consumer dissatisfaction. This bifurcated economic experience, coupled with rising underemployment and duration of unemployment, suggests a labor market that is not 'hitting on all cylinders' for everyone.

Diane Swank, Chief Economist at KPMG, highlighted that local government hiring and leisure/hospitality drove gains, but noted 'very elevated numbers of what we call the underemployed' and rising unemployment duration. She stated, 'the top third of wage earners are seeing their wages pick up much more than inflation... the bottom two-thirds of the income strata, they're seeing their wages erode and fall below the level of inflation.' She also predicted inflation above 4.2% and the Fed needing to hike rates.

The ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz, now 100 days in, has triggered a severe energy crisis, particularly in Asia, which was heavily dependent on supplies from the region. While initial shocks were absorbed by US and Chinese oil inventories, the long-term outlook is dire. Asia is experiencing rationing and critical shortages of fertilizer and diesel, impacting agriculture. The US sees rising gasoline prices, and Europe faces jet fuel issues. The US, as the world's largest oil producer, has some insulation but remains part of a global market. Recovery, even if the Strait reopens, is projected to be slow and complex, taking up to six months.

Daniel Jurgen, Vice Chairman of S&P Global, stated, 'It's an energy crisis now... they're really feeling it because they were so dependent on the supplies from the Strait of Hormuz.' He identified fertilizer as the 'number one' overlooked impact. He also estimated a '6 months to get back to 80%' recovery post-reopening due to logistical challenges and potential damage.

A notable shift in Republican behavior is emerging, with lawmakers demonstrating a willingness to challenge President Trump on key legislative and policy matters. This defiance was evident in the Senate's passage of an immigration bill that excluded the President's requested $1.8 billion settlement fund for political allies and $1 billion for a White House ballroom. Additionally, the Senate failed to renew a government surveillance authority (FISA Section 702) due to concerns about a Trump appointee, and a federal judge struck down a major immigration freeze. This trend is attributed to factors like primary election losses for Trump-backed candidates and a desire to assert congressional authority.

Jonathan Kapart noted, 'You see Republicans, congressional Republicans finally deciding, you know what, I've got to push back simply because what he's doing is wrong.' David Brooks described it as a 'two-inch tsunami' but a 'good sign' for Congress 'standing up for their branch of government.' Examples cited include the immigration bill, the omitted settlement fund and ballroom funds, and the failure to renew FISA Section 702.
