Prof. Ted Postol: It’s Over” – Israel Faces Total Collapse If This War Continues
Quick Read
Summary
Takeaways
- ❖Netanyahu's long-term objective is framed as destroying Iran as a functioning state, similar to Syria, to eliminate regional opposition.
- ❖Israel's air defense system, particularly Iron Dome, was critically mismanaged, wasting interceptors against ballistic missiles it couldn't hit.
- ❖Iran, leveraging Chinese and Russian satellite intelligence, precisely destroyed key US/Israeli ballistic missile defense radars within the first two days of the conflict.
- ❖Iranian ballistic missiles demonstrate enhanced lethality due to sustained high velocity (Mach 10+) and increased explosive density upon impact.
- ❖Low-flying, small radar cross-section drones are nearly impossible for current airborne warning systems to detect due to ground clutter and radar limitations.
- ❖Iran's control over the Strait of Hormuz and its ability to sell oil at market rates despite sanctions provides significant financial leverage.
- ❖The widespread availability of commercial technologies like Starlink terminals complicates defense against advanced drones, as selective disabling is impossible without disrupting friendly communications.
- ❖Professor Postol advocates for an immediate cessation of all US aid and arms shipments to Israel, framing current Israeli actions as "monstrous" and "fascist."
- ❖He expresses grave concern that Netanyahu, likened to Hitler in his disregard for his own people, might resort to nuclear weapons if Israel faces a desperate situation.
Insights
1Netanyahu's Destructive Ambition
Professor Postol asserts that Benjamin Netanyahu's objective is to destroy Iran as a functioning state, turning it into a 'failed state of fragments' similar to Syria. This strategy aims to eliminate states that could oppose Israeli military and expansionist objectives, making it easier for Israel to pursue its agenda.
It appears by every measure and action Netanyahu has made that his objective is to destroy Iran as a functioning state. He would like to turn it into a failed state, a state of fragments that would be fighting among themselves, much like what he accomplished with the help of the United States in Syria.
2Israel's Air Defense Mismanagement
Israel critically mismanaged its air defense systems, particularly the Iron Dome. Interceptors were wasted against ballistic missile targets they had 'zero chance of hitting,' leading to a depletion of resources that could have been effective against drone attacks. This strategic blunder left Israel vulnerable to evolving threats.
This shows that the air defense operations were throwing away interceptors against targets that they had no possibility of hitting, zero chance of hitting, and instead you could have saved these interceptors for the drone attacks that are now occurring.
3Iran's Strategic Radar Destruction
Iran, utilizing high-resolution satellite reconnaissance data from China and Russia, executed a 'tremendously effective attack' on US and Israeli ballistic missile defense radars. Within the first two days of the war, they destroyed critical THAAD radars and a giant radar in Qatar, which was essential for early detection and guidance, severely degrading the overall defense capability.
The Iranians very cleverly... used them to destroy these fantastically expensive and small numbers of ballistic missile defense radars that the Americans and Israelis had. In particular, there were four THAAD radars... and a giant radar in Qatar that was critical for the overall defense of Israel against ballistic missiles.
4Enhanced Lethality of Iranian Ballistic Missiles
Iranian ballistic missiles, such as the Alphata, are designed with rocket motors that sustain speeds of Mach 10 or higher upon impact. This kinetic energy, combined with the missile's high explosive warhead, effectively doubles the explosive density, resulting in 'much more violent explosions' and 'tremendous damage' to highly reinforced buildings.
The rocket motor keeps the speed high. And so when it hits the ground, it hits the ground at Mach 10 or higher... you have twice the explosive density of what you would have from just TNT or just a kinetic impact. And this causes a much more violent explosion which causes much more damage at the at the aim point at the target point.
5Undetectable Low-Flying Drones
Low-flying drones with small radar cross-sections (comparable to a bird) are nearly impossible for airborne warning and control systems (AWACS) to detect. This is due to the Earth's curvature creating shadow regions and, more significantly, 'ground clutter' – interfering reflected signals from terrain, buildings, and weather – which hides the drone even when it's within radar line of sight.
You cannot see the drone in the clutter... the radar aircraft are not going to contribute to an air defense warning system against these drones... I just cannot see these low-flying very low radar cross-section targets.
6Starlink's Dual-Use Dilemma
The widespread availability of commercial Starlink terminals, which are small, inexpensive, and easily acquired, enables drones to perform real-time homing on targets. This creates a significant dilemma for defenders: they cannot selectively disable hostile drone communications via Starlink without also cutting off their own forces' critical communications that rely on the same system.
The availability of the Starlink system is now making it possible for Iran to use drones to do realtime homing on targets... I have no way of selectively turning off the drone signal... All I can do is turn off all the Starlink satellites that are functioning over let's say the air base. But if I do that then I turn off all the Starlink communications that the airbase is using.
Bottom Line
Iran's military planning has been 'superbly well executed,' making no blunders, unlike Israel's air defense strategy.
This indicates a significant and unexpected shift in military competence and strategic foresight in the region, with Iran demonstrating a sophisticated understanding of modern warfare.
Western military and intelligence agencies must fundamentally reassess Iranian capabilities, doctrine, and strategic decision-making, moving beyond previous assumptions of technological or tactical inferiority.
Iran's control over the Strait of Hormuz allows it to selectively provide oil to 'non-hostile' nations, effectively bypassing US sanctions and boosting its revenue from $45 to $120 per barrel.
This reveals a critical vulnerability in global energy markets and the long-term efficacy of economic sanctions against strategically positioned actors, empowering Iran financially during conflict.
Policymakers should re-evaluate global energy security strategies and the geopolitical impact of chokepoints, considering alternative approaches to mitigate the financial leverage of states like Iran.
Key Concepts
Divide and Conquer
Netanyahu's alleged strategy to destabilize and fragment regional states like Iran and Syria, creating a power vacuum that benefits Israeli military and expansionist objectives.
Lessons
- Advocate for a comprehensive re-evaluation of US foreign policy regarding military aid to Israel, considering its impact on regional stability and long-term US interests.
- Investigate and address the vulnerabilities of advanced air defense systems to sophisticated drone and missile attacks, focusing on developing new radar detection capabilities and layered counter-drone technologies.
- Examine the geopolitical and military implications of widely available commercial satellite communication systems (like Starlink) for future conflicts, and develop strategies to mitigate their dual-use risks without disrupting essential communications.
Notable Moments
Professor Postol's comparison of Netanyahu's behavior and disregard for his own people to Adolf Hitler.
This highly provocative comparison underscores the professor's extreme concern about Netanyahu's leadership, framing it as a profound moral and existential threat to Israel itself, not just its adversaries.
The revelation that a significant portion of Israelis killed in the October 2023 incursion were allegedly killed by Israeli forces firing indiscriminately.
This claim challenges the prevailing narrative of the October 2023 events, suggesting internal failures or controversial rules of engagement within the Israeli Defense Forces, which could have significant implications for accountability and public perception.
Quotes
"Netanyahu is irrational... he's a psychopath... this man has destroyed Israel."
"My country will not become dominated by Israeli interests, Israeli monstrous and fascist and murderous interests."
"If they have no bombs, they can't continue killing people in Gaza the way they've been doing. They can't carpet continue carpet bombing Lebanon."
"The moral judgment about how Hitler behaved and who he was applies just as well to Netanyahu as to Adolf Hitler."
"Iran is the inventor of the kamicazi drone that's running havoc with the United States and in Israel now and leading to Iran being the dominant military power now in this current war."
