Maryland Governor Wes Moore publicly implied racism after being disinvited from a National Governor's Association dinner hosted by former President Trump. The host argues this claim is disingenuous because all Democratic governors, including Colorado Governor Jared Polis (who is white), were also disinvited, indicating a broader political exclusion rather than a targeted racial one.

Moore stated on CNN, 'it's not lost to me that I am the only black governor... and I find that to be particularly painful.' The host countered, 'President Trump actually disinvited all the Democrat governors... There was also a white governor, Jerick Pace of Colorado, who was disinvited.'

Governor Wes Moore has repeatedly told a story about his great-grandfather, Reverend Josiah Johnson Thomas, being a vocal minister who was chased out of South Carolina by the KKK with his family, forcing them to flee the country to Jamaica. This narrative is presented as a key part of Moore's identity and political appeal.

Moore stated, 'my grandfather was actually the first one on my mom's side of the family born in this country... when he was just a toddler, the Ku Klux Clan ran him and the rest of my family out of this country.'

Reporting from the Washington Free Beacon, cited by the host, details that historical records from the archives of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the Diocese of South Carolina contradict Moore's KKK story. These records indicate Reverend Josiah Johnson Thomas made an 'orderly and public transfer' from South Carolina to Jamaica in December 1924 to succeed a deceased pastor, not a secret flight from the KKK. Furthermore, there's no mention of KKK trouble in his documentation, and the KKK did not have a chapter in Pineville, SC, where he preached.

The host stated, 'Detailed church archival records as well as contemporary newspaper coverage indicate that Thomas, a Jamaican native on December 13th, 1924, made an orderly and public transfer from South Carolina to the island of his birth, where he was appointed to succeed a prominent Jamaican pastor.'

Beyond the KKK story, Governor Wes Moore is accused of a pattern of embellishing his background. These alleged falsehoods include claiming to be born and raised in Baltimore (which he was not), claiming induction into a non-existent Maryland College Football Hall of Fame, falsely claiming a Bronze Star (which he later received but claimed prematurely), exaggerating his academic record at Oxford, and misrepresenting his childhood as 'difficult' despite attending elite private schools.
