Hezbollah, as Iran's most powerful proxy, was poised to execute a large-scale invasion of the Galilee. However, Hamas's October 7th attack, while devastating, was an uncoordinated 'jump of the gun' that disrupted Iran's broader 'ring of fire' strategy. This premature action gave Israel the strategic window to launch its pre-planned, intelligence-led operations against Hezbollah before the full coordinated assault could materialize.

Jonathan Krias states, 'their hubris got the better of them and that one of their proxies got carried away with fantasies and really jumped the gun.' Hassan Nasallah's speech after October 7th framed it as a 'Palestinian issue,' indicating a lack of full coordination or readiness for Hezbollah to commit.

Israel's intelligence community maintained an intense focus on Hezbollah since the 2006 war, meticulously mapping its infrastructure, personnel, and daily routines. This long-term, deep penetration allowed for the development of sophisticated operations like the 'Pager operation,' which involved secretly planted explosive devices, and provided precise targeting data for the elimination of key leaders and the destruction of hidden military assets.

Jonathan Krias notes, 'since 2006 we meant business and we collected intelligence knowing that Israeli lives depended on the quality of intelligence... there was very little movement activity or anything done by Hezbollah that wasn't monitored, analyzed, classified and understood by Israeli intelligence.' Lieutenant Colonel J. adds, 'We actually started the events in Lebanon with 20 years or so of knowledge.'

The 'Pager operation,' followed by the 'walkie-talkie operation,' created immediate chaos within Hezbollah's ranks by targeting tactical commanders and communication systems. This disruption was swiftly followed by the elimination of senior leadership, including Ibrahim Akil (head of operations) and Hassan Nasallah, effectively decapitating the organization's command and control and severely impacting its ability to coordinate a counter-attack.

Lieutenant Colonel J. describes pagers blowing up in pockets, causing 'chaos' and making it unsafe to communicate. He states, 'Two days afterwards, we eliminate senior leaders... Ibrahim Akil... Several days later, we eliminate Hassan Nasallah in his bunker in Beirut.'

Hezbollah deliberately embedded its military infrastructure, including weapon caches, launch sites, and tunnels, within civilian villages and homes in southern Lebanon. This strategy aimed to deter Israeli strikes by leveraging civilian casualties for international condemnation. However, Israeli ground operations systematically exposed and dismantled this hidden infrastructure, revealing anti-tank missiles and RPGs concealed behind hollow walls in children's rooms.
