A wetlands ecologist, Annie, found the severely decomposed body of a 6-8 year old child while collecting mud samples in Big Cypress National Preserve. The body was missing legs, bloated, and infested with bugs, making identification impossible due to extensive decay. The case went cold, leaving the child nameless and the family without closure.

It was a human. It was extremely bloated, rotten to the point of being a bluish greenish color and missing its legs below the knee. But even with all that decay, I could tell from its dies that the corpse had belonged to a child of approximately 6 to 8 years old. There was also no missing kid reports that matched the area or the timeline. So, the kid was eventually buried as a John/Jane Doe. And the case went cold.

During WWII, two German POWs escaped Camp Clinton near Canton, Mississippi, and vanished in the Pearl River swamps. Later, a local teenager, George Jackson, who went to investigate rumors of ghosts in the swamp, also disappeared. A local man, Wayan, encountered three white, chalk-painted men who had beaten and hanged George Jackson. Wayan fought them off, killing two. The local sheriff confirmed the bodies, but Camp Clinton denied any more escapees, leaving the identity and motive of these 'monsters' unknown.

Three ghostly spirits seemed to hover on a nearby bank for a moment... George Jackson... was never seen again. Whan realized who it was. It was young George Jackson. But when Wayan asked what the hell had happened to him, all George said was, 'I'm sorry.' Just as Whan noticed the rope around his neck. The bodies of the men who attacked Whan appeared a bright white. It turns out that before they'd go hunting for people out there, they'd strip down to their drawers and paint their bodies with paste made out of water and white chalk.

In Prohibition-era Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana, Chief Henry Herbert's initial leniency towards bootleggers ended after one of his officers was killed. He launched a campaign of destruction against stills and bootleggers. In retaliation, bootleggers murdered his wife and daughter, filling their lungs with moonshine. Driven mad by grief, Chief Herbert vanished into the bayou, becoming a legendary, unseen hunter who tortured, killed, and filled the lungs of bootleggers with their own moonshine.

After one of their officers were killed, that all changed. Someone had murdered them and then filled their lungs with bootleg liquor. He walked off into the bayou, never to be seen again... They'd be missing their scalps, their noses, and sometimes their whole jaws had been ripped out... to fill the lungs of the dying with the same moonshine they filled the lungs of his wife and daughter with.

While fishing in North Carolina's Great Dismal Swamp, the narrator's friend, Earl, jumped into the water to retrieve a dropped beer. Something large bit Earl's leg, leaving a raw scrape from knee to ankle. They identified it as a catfish bite, implying the fish was at least 12 feet long, far exceeding local records of 5-6 feet. The incident sparked a local 'dismal monster hunt' by other fishermen, though the monstrous creature was never caught.

Something knocked him off balance and he let out a scream... There was this big ugly red scrape running across his calf... The span of that bite went from knee to ankle on the back of his leg, meaning the catfish had to be pushed at least 12 ft long to make a mark that big.
